I love nature. Especially when it's in the form of trees. Forests, woodlands. Sunlight filtering through swaying leaves, roots bulging through the soil, the crunch of pine needles and twigs underfoot. Mist drifting through the tree trunks. Moss and fungi sprouting from the bark.
But I don't know anything about nature. Not really. Now, I know an oak and a birch by sight (the King and Queen of forest trees) and what several of the evergreens look like but that's about it. I enjoy nature as a tourist, and an uneducated one at that. I know nothing of the other trees, of fungi, of mosses, of the plants of the undergrowth and hedgerow.
But recently, I could feel an urge building within me, an urge to educate myself, to learn about the wonderful nature of this country, the flora on my doorstep. How can I imbue a sense of wonder into my young children when I can't explain, I can't educate? How can I answer the eternal whys of my small boys?
Well, I can't. But I want to be able to.
And that's when I had the idea for this blog.
A log, as it were, of learning. A way of recording the things I learn, the way I feel, the family's adventures in the outdoors. A bit of trivia. I love trivia. Who doesn't love trivia? A way of sharing my joy at the natural world. Some reviews of books. The crafts I enjoy, of which more later.
Getting to know the woods. Getting to know the plants. Getting to know how geography, and weather, shape the natural world.
Getting to know yew.
